There are 60 days left till the end of session on May 4th.
Right now we are finishing up the fact finding portion of the budget process, including meeting with agencies and Commissioners. I have attended hundreds of hours of public hearings and subcommittee meetings in my role as Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee.
In addition to my duties on arguably the most important piece of state business–the budget; I also have been very attentive to my district. I have brought forward many initiatives on behalf of the residents in #cthouse34. One concept is to allow food trucks or participants in farmer’s markets across the state to have licenses obtained in one town–reciprocal in another.
Here is the latest update on my official legislative website.
My latest e-newsletters to my constituents is below. Read on to see how you can testify in support of other important local issues. As many of you know, the environment and our state parks remain a constant area of work for me. I love our district and these special places we all cherish…
As you are aware the water levels and invasive weeds have been problematic for Bashan Lake for quite some time as a result of the extended dam repair project. I had promised residents around the lake that I would propose a bill that would require the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to enter into an agreement with the town of East Haddam and the Bashan Lake Association and enable water drawdowns at Bashan Lake. This bill accomplishes that and I am grateful for the support of the Environment Committee who agreed to raise the bill.
In addition, I also want to make you aware of another bill proposal concerning the establishment of a kayak launch at Sunrise State Park for individuals with disabilities. This state park area has been a focus of mine since I was elected. Although I had assurances that DEEP would in fact create a kayak launch at the base of the hill by the former dining room, it still has not happened. Therefore, I am raising legislation to accomplish this longtime goal. The wording of this bill would ensure that the parking for this launch would be in close enough proximity to allow for rooftop launching. Currently, even though technically someone could launch a kayak there, they would have to trolley their kayak over steep terrain to do so. This is unacceptable and I hope I can count on your support.
Upcoming Public Hearings
Below you will find two bills scheduled for public hearings on Friday, March 11, starting at 12:30 p.m. in the Environment Committee that are of interest to our community:
H.B. 5583 – AN ACT CONCERNING AN AGREEMENT REGARDING ANNUAL WATER LEVEL DRAW DOWNS AT BASHAN LAKE IN THE TOWN OF EAST HADDAM.
I highly encourage you to submit electronic testimony or testify in person. If you do not live in East Haddam but have a summer cottage, I strongly urge you to get in touch with your state representative and ask that they co-sponsor this bill. Click here to find your state representative.
H.B. 5584 – AN ACT CONCERNING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A KAYAK LAUNCH AT SUNRISE STATE PARK FOR PERSONS WITH HANDICAPS.
I believe that it is important to ensure that all Connecticut residents have equal access to the many outdoor recreational opportunities available at our State Parks and Forests. For that reason, I urge you to join me and support this proposal to establish a kayak launch at Sunrise State Park for individuals with disabilities.
